A young bunny and his friends collect their hopes and dreams in jars. When a big storm washes them away, the bunnies have to find the strength to overcome doubt and destruction and begin again. This is such a beautiful metaphor for the things that stand in the way of our dreams and that set us back that must be overcome in order to hold onto hope and continue to go after our dreams.

Do you live near water? We live near the ocean and I am always looking for books that encourage taking care of and celebrating its wonder which these two beautiful books do in different ways…
Odder: An Otter’s Story
Powerful and moving this incredible story tells of an orphaned pup rescued by humans and eventually set free. This pup learns to play and belong until a shark wound lands her back with the humans who raised her. Now she can’t leave her human friends but she adapts to a new role, caring and helping new orphaned pups return to the ocean.
Inspired by a true story of a program that pairs orphaned otter pups with surrogate mothers this is a picture book adaptation of Katherine Applegate’s bestselling novel.

We Leap Together
This captivating story parallels the lives of a young whale calf and her mama alongside a boy and his mama. It shows how they are alike, they stick close to their mama, they snuggle and play, sing, whisper, and leap. I love that this book encourages readers to look at wildlife through a whole new lens and with a new level of compassion and understanding too.

Wings can hover, hum, and swim.
Small wings, big wings, near and far.

What would your kid wish for if they could wish for anything at all? How about you?
I love this book. A young girl has just moved into a new apartment and when she is feeling glum her father grants her three wishes. Only the wishes she makes out loud come true and this gently shows the power of words and speaking the things we want and need into the world.
With some imagination and a lot of love this book shows the challenge that can come with new but also the healing power of the ones who are always with us and care enough to help make our spoken wishes come to life.

When a young girl’s father dies, she hides under her umbrella – it helps her to feel safe and protected, just as it did during her father’s stormy funeral. She refuses to put it away and takes it everywhere with her, even to the movies and inside her classroom. Eventually, when she is ready, she offers to protect a young boy from the rain, by letting him in, she is able to eventually put her umbrella away.
I love how this book shows the importance of sitting in our grief but also the importance of letting others in when we are ready and allowing ourselves to eventually set the storm behind us rather than living in it forever.
