The Lao Family avoids waste whenever possible but for the youngest family member, Sunny, this means hand me downs. Tired of not being able to shine in her own way she dreams of wearing something that doesn’t match her sisters and that they have worn before. She finds the sweetest solution to not purchasing something new and honoring both tradition and herself.

Groundhog day is around the corner on 2/2!
Whenever I hear Groundhog Day the Bill Murray movie immediately comes to mind but as this fascinating book shows there is a lot more to the holiday! This engaging and accessible book explains what the holiday is, its history and folklore, how to celebrate and even includes fun facts and activities! I love this series because it really peels behind the curtain in a child friendly way and answers all those questions that my kiddos wonder about when a holiday rolls around!

I LOVE this one! Not only is it simply a fun humorous story that kids will want to read again and again but it is written in the most brilliant rhyme making it fun to read aloud! In this story an Opossum named Topsy is cooking up a welcome breakfast for her friend LouAnn, a bear who will soon be waking up from her long winter nap and be hungry! As she makes pancakes though, they keep disappearing and it isn’t until LouAnn shows up that she discovers the culprits!
Adorable from beginning to end this is a fun one for welcoming spring or anyone looking to bring a few extra giggles into their home.

Did you know that America is celebrating its 250th anniversary in 2026?! This ABC book is the perfect way to celebrate. From our “Elegant eagle[s]” that sore over the Grand Canyon to the “Gold Rush” to “Nasa”, this book includes tidbits of history and some of the many things that make America a place we love.

Setting a goal and making it happen!
In this humorous book Bunny is starting school and has decided to be a funny bunny and make everyone laugh. His jokes land flat and the harder he tries the worse it gets. When he finds a friend to partner with though they begin practicing and testing out their material until finally bunny goes from unfunny to funny.
My favorite part of this story is that Bunny sets a goal and learns that success takes dedication and practice. I love the message that kids can decide to be whatever they want if they are willing to persevere.

This book a great resource for introducing and teaching kids about their bodies, specifically their private parts. I also love that it explains consent and lets them know that they are in charge of their bodies and what that means and looks like in practice.
While the book is geared toward young children (and is great for them) I think it is good for continuing those important conversations with older ones too!

Have you ever heard of The Hungry Ghost Festival?
I learned that it is the seventh month of the Lunar Calendar and in Chinese culture is a time when people “believe the realms of the living open up for visitors from the dead, and hungry ghosts roam around, scavenging for food.” This story tells of Gwei who is cursed to roam but never feel full until he finds that perhaps friendship can fill him up after all.
This is a fascinating window into a cultural belief that I was unfamiliar with and a sweet reminder of the ways friends fill us up.

Romi lives with her abuelita in Santiago de Cuba. Abuelita is a seamstress and can create magic from the little they have. She turns an outgrown dress into a baby blanket, which later becomes a tallis and wedding chuppah, and ultimately something else particularly special that you will have to read this book to find out what it is.
I love that Romi learns to sew and create from her aubelita and that this sweet story shows how value is all in the way we choose to see the world. This story is beautifully interwoven with Jewish traditions, family, and connection.

Little Fox peeks out from her den.
Biting cold nips her nose.
Yip, yip, she calls,
as Mama Fox surveys the land.
Little Fox wriggles in delight.
She is ready to explore.
A mama fox and little fox awaken on a cold morning and journey through the Arctic. As they explore they come across new creatures and sounds as well as a human mother and child. This is a stunning book that offers a window into a magical part of our world and the back of the book helps to raise awareness about climate change and its toll.

Did you ever have an imaginary friend?
Patrick, the boy in this story has one named Billy Whiskers who shows up when he is feeling nervous, worried or alone. Together they read and play, and through their adventures, Patrick finds the courage to be brave and step into the real world. When he does he makes friends and needs Billy Whiskers less and less.
I love that this story embraces imagination, using the tools that work for us and encourages readers to take comfort in their creativity and be brave when they are ready.
